Department Tools and Services

From Stat DS Computing Wiki

These are services provided by the department that aren't directly tied to statistical research. While you may not end up using all of these services, we recommend familiarizing yourself with this page for future reference.

StatDS Account

Every member of the CMU Department of Statistics & Data Science has a StatDS account that is separate from their CMU school account. This account is used to log into department servers and the end of semester evaluation system.

  • Your username is the same as your CMU AndrewID
  • Your password is not the same as for your AndrewID, and must be set separately. If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it here

Printing Services

For everyday printing and scanning, there are several printers available at FMS and in Baker.

  • See Department Printers for more information on connecting to and using these printers
  • For poster printing or other specialized printing jobs at CMU, see Tartan Ink

Google Drive

All persons with an active AndrewID have access to 25GB of Google Drive space. Simply log into google drive using the same AndrewID and password as with other university services.

  • See here for more information on Google Drive and related services provided by CMU
  • To use Google Drive to back up files on your personal device, see this help article

Web Hosting

The CMU Department of Statistics & Data Science provides web hosting services to all department members. This can be used to host your personal website or other front-end applications.

  1. You must first activate your web hosting service by emailing remarks@stat.cmu.edu
  2. You can then access the web hosting server via ssh [StatID]@stat.cmu.edu. You will log in with your StatDS ID and password and land in your home directory.
  3. Put website files inside the public_html folder inside your home directory. Your website will be publicly available at https://stat.cmu.edu/~[StatID]

There are many tools available for building a website. For example:

  • Google Sites for quick and beginner-friendly website construction
  • Jekyll for flexible, markdown-based creation of static websites
